  19. NOTE: LaTeX is installed and ready to use in DirectTeX 2.0 and later.
  20. If you have an older version of DirectTeX then please upgrade.  Don't
  21. expect any support if you decide to merge this release of LaTeX with
  22. an older version of DirectTeX!  If you have DirectTeX 2.0 or later
  23. then you will only need to read the following instructions if you
  24. decide to update the version of LaTeX distributed with DirectTeX.

  26. NOTE: All folder names are relative to your global TeX folder, e.g.
  27. `TeX-Inputs:LaTeX' refers to the folder `{dt_TeXFolder}TeX-Inputs:LaTeX'.

  33. This file contains instructions on how to install LaTeX for DirectTeX.
  34. Before reading this file you should read install.txt, which explains
  35. how the LaTeX installation works in more detail.

  50. SAVING ANY OLD VERSION OF LATEX
  51. ===============================

  53. If you have DirectTeX 2.0, you do not have to do anything do save the
  54. old LaTeX 2.09 because it is already located in a folder `LaTeX-2.09'
  55. and not within the `TeX-Inputs' folder, which is normally searched by
  56. TeX.

  59. UNPACKING THE DISTRIBUTION
  60. ==========================
  61.  
  62. To unpack the LaTeX distribution:
  63.  
  64.  * Delete all files from the `TeX-Inputs:LaTeX' folder.
  65.  
  66.  * Move all files in the distribution to this folder.
  67.  
  68.  * Start up DirectTeX and set the current directory to this folder.
  69.  
  70.  * Execute the following commands:
  71.  
  72.       Set dt_TeXLogFiles ''
  73.       TeX -i unpack.ins
  74.  
  75. This will start the unpacking process.  This may take some time:
  76. about 7 minutes on a Quadra 840.  Now move the files `gind.ist'
  77. and `gglo.ist' to the folder `Aux-Inputs:MakeIndex'.

  80. CREATING THE LATEX FORMAT
  81. =========================

  83. To create the LaTeX format:
  84.  
  85.  * Select `Initialize Formats...' from the `Formats' menu.
  86.  
  87.  * Select `LaTeX' or `BigLaTeX' and click OK.
  88.  
  89. If you want to create the format manually, simply execute the command
  90.  
  91.       TeX -i latex.ltx
  92.  
  93. NOTE: DirectTeX v2.0 does not contain a hyphen.tex file.  Instead it
  94. contains a folder `TeX-Inputs:Hyphenation' which contains some files
  95. `hyphen-??.tex' and a file `hyphen.cfg'.  The latter one may be
  96. used to specify the hyphenation patterns to use.  It is configured to
  97. include the German and the US English hyphenation patterns and to set
  98. the default language to US English.

  101. CHECKING THAT THE INSTALLATION WORKED
  102. =====================================

  104. To check that the installation worked:
  105.  
  106.  * Set the current directory to the `TeX-LogFiles' folder.
  107.  
  108.  * Execute the command
  109.  
  110.       LaTeX ltxcheck.tex
  111.  
  112. This will run a test of the LaTeX installation and should produce
  113. `OK!'  to a number of tests.  If it does not then see `PROBLEMS' 
  114. in install.txt.
  115.  
  116. You have now installed LaTeX!
  117.

  119. REMOVING UNNECESSARY FILES
  120. ==========================
  121.  
  122. After LaTeX has been successfully installed, you might want to delete
  123. some non-essential files (after making backup copies) to free up space
  124. on your hard disk.  From the `TeX-Inputs:LaTeX' folder, delete all
  125. files ending in:
  126.  
  127.    .ins .drv .dtx .fdd .log .aux .txt .err .ps
  128.  
  129. and the file
  130.  
  131.    Makefile.unx
  132.  
  133. You may also look at the files *guide.tex, typeset and print them and
  134. then delete them to save more space. These files contain some
  135. information about certain characteristics of LaTeX.
